The Francis H. Holmes House is a special old house in New Britain, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, between 1906 and 1908. This house is unique because it was designed by a famous local architect, Walter P. Crabtree. It was also built for Francis Holmes, who owned a big brick-making business. The house shows off different styles of architecture and was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984!

About the Holmes House

The Francis H. Holmes House is located in the southeastern part of New Britain. You can find it at the corner of Rocky Hill Avenue and South Street. It's a two-story building made of brick. The roof is wide and slopes downwards, and it has pretty brownstone decorations.

This house mixes different building styles. You can see parts of the Jacobethan style, which uses groups of three windows and pointed gables. It also has touches of the Shingle style and Craftsman woodwork. The roof has large, gabled windows called dormers, which have brownstone walls.

There's an enclosed porch that wraps around the front and side of the house. On the other side, there used to be a covered entrance for carriages called a porte-cochere, but it's also enclosed now.

Who Lived Here?

The house was designed by Walter P. Crabtree and built for Francis Holmes. Mr. Holmes owned a brickyard nearby in Berlin, Connecticut. He was also important in starting the Central Connecticut Brick Company. This company brought together several brickyards from the area.

Walter P. Crabtree was a well-known architect in the region. He designed many buildings in New Britain and Hartford. Some of his other famous works include the local Masonic lodge and the Elks building.
