Who Was Francis Ingoldsby?
Francis Ingoldsby was born in 1615. His father was Sir Richard Ingoldsby and his mother was Elizabeth Cromwell. They lived in a place called Lenborough, in Buckinghamshire, England.
His Early Life and Education
When he was 16 years old, in 1631, Francis started studying at Lincoln College, Oxford. This was a famous university. Later in his life, he sold his family estate in Lenborough.

Francis Ingoldsby became an important person in English politics during a time when England was not ruled by a king. This period was called the Protectorate.
Serving in Parliament
In 1654, Francis Ingoldsby was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Buckingham. An MP is a person elected by the people to represent them in Parliament. He served in the First Protectorate Parliament.
He was re-elected for Buckingham two more times:
- In 1656, for the Second Protectorate Parliament.
- In 1659, for the Third Protectorate Parliament.
After the Monarchy Returned
After the Protectorate, the king returned to rule England. This event was called the Restoration. Francis Ingoldsby was considered for a special honor called "Knight of the Royal Oak." However, this special group of knights was never actually created.
His Family and Later Life
Francis Ingoldsby had a brother named Richard Ingoldsby. His brother was involved in a very serious event in English history. Richard Ingoldsby was one of the people who played a part in the trial of King Charles I. However, he was one of the few people involved in that event who was later forgiven.
Francis Ingoldsby passed away in 1681. At the time of his death, he was living at the Charterhouse in London, which was a place that provided support for people in their later years.
