Sir Francis Joseph Campbell (born October 9, 1832 – died June 30, 1914) was an important person who helped fight against slavery. He was also a teacher and helped start a special college for blind people in the United Kingdom. This college is called the Royal National College for the Blind.

Early Life and Musical Talent

Francis Joseph Campbell was born in Winchester, Tennessee, USA. When he was just five years old, he had an accident and lost his eyesight. Even though he couldn't see, Francis was a very talented musician.

By the time he was 16, he became a music teacher at the Tennessee School for the Blind. Later, he became the music director at the Wisconsin School for the Blind. He also taught at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Standing Up for What's Right

While teaching in Wisconsin, Francis Campbell became known for his strong views against slavery. At one point, he was told to change his mind within 24 hours or face serious danger. He bravely refused to give up his beliefs. Because many people felt sympathy for him due to his blindness, he was not harmed. This showed his courage in standing up for what he believed was right.

Founding a College for the Blind

Francis Campbell often traveled between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. In 1871, he met Thomas Armitage in London. Francis had plans to start a training college for blind people in the United States.

However, Dr. Armitage convinced him to open the college in London instead. They started The Royal Normal College and Academy for the Blind with just two students. Francis Campbell became its first principal. This college still exists today and is now known as the Royal National College for the Blind. It helps many blind students learn and grow.

Achievements and Legacy

Francis Campbell was a person who loved challenges. He was the first blind person ever to climb Mont Blanc, a very tall mountain. Later in his life, he became a British citizen. In 1909, King Edward VII made him a Knight Bachelor, which means he was given the title "Sir."

He retired from the college in 1912. His son, Guy Marshall Campbell, took over as principal.

The American Library Association gives an award each year called the Francis Joseph Campbell Award. This award honors people who have done amazing things to improve library services for blind people. It includes a special certificate and a medal.
