Francis Alexander Keith-Falconer, 8th Earl of Kintore (born June 7, 1828 – died July 18, 1880) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the titles of 8th Earl of Kintore, 10th Lord Falconer of Halkerton, and 8th Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall. He was also the Chief of Clan Keith, a historic Scottish family.
Early Life and Family
Francis Alexander Keith-Falconer was born on June 7, 1828. He was the second son of Anthony Keith-Falconer, who was the 7th Earl of Kintore. His mother was Louisa (whose maiden name was Hawkins).
In 1840, his parents divorced. His mother later remarried, but she passed away the following year in 1841.
Francis had an older brother named William Adrian Keith-Falconer, who was known as Lord Inverurie. He also had a younger brother, Charles James Keith-Falconer, and a sister, Lady Isabella Catherine Keith-Falconer.
His grandparents on his father's side were William Keith-Falconer, the 6th Earl of Kintore, and Maria Bannerman. His mother's father was Francis Hawkins from Bareilly, India.
Becoming an Earl and Public Service
Francis's older brother, Lord Inverurie, sadly died in 1843 without marrying. This meant that Francis became the next in line to inherit his father's titles.
His father passed away on July 11, 1844. At that time, Francis became the 8th Earl of Kintore. He also inherited the titles of 8th Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall.
On May 28, 1856, Lord Kintore took on a significant role as the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire. A Lord Lieutenant is a representative of the British monarch in a county. He took over this role from James Carnegie, the 9th Earl of Southesk. He served in Kincardineshire until 1863. Sir James Burnett then took his place.
In December 1863, Lord Kintore became the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. He succeeded Charles Gordon, the 10th Marquess of Huntly, in this position. He continued to serve as Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire until his death in 1880. After he passed away, John Hamilton-Gordon, the 1st Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair, became the next Lord Lieutenant.
Personal Life and Family
On June 24, 1851, Lord Kintore married his cousin, Louisa Madeleine Hawkins. She was the second daughter of his mother's brother, Francis Hawkins. Louisa passed away in 1916.
Together, Lord Kintore and Louisa had several children:
- Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore: He later married Lady Sydney Charlotte Montagu.
- Hon. Dudley Metcalfe Courtenay Keith-Falconer (1854–1873): He died when he was young and did not marry.
- Hon. Ion Grant Neville Keith-Falconer (1856–1887): He married Gwendolen Bevan in 1884.
- Lady Madeleine Dora Keith-Falconer (1858–1925): She married Captain Francis Henry Tonge in 1889.
- Lady Blanche Catherine Keith-Falconer (1859–1922): She married Colonel Granville Roland Francis Smith in 1883.
- Hon Arthur Keith-Falconer (1863–1877): He also died when he was young.
- Lady Maude Keith-Falconer (born 1869).
Lord Kintore passed away on July 18, 1880. His wife, Louisa, who was then known as the Dowager Countess of Kintore, died later on February 6, 1916.
