Francis North, 2nd Baron Guilford (born December 14, 1673 – died October 17, 1729) was an important British nobleman and politician. He was a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament.
Life and Public Service
Francis North became the 2nd Baron Guilford in 1685. He took over this title after his father, also named Francis North, passed away.
In 1701, he was one of a few noblemen who disagreed with a new law called the Act of Settlement. This law decided who would inherit the English throne. Francis North and others voted against it because they felt strongly about the issue.
From 1703 to 1705, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Essex. A Lord Lieutenant is like the King's or Queen's representative in a county. They help with local government and defense.
Later, in 1712, Francis North joined the Privy Council. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King. From 1713 to 1714, he held the important job of First Lord of Trade. This role meant he was in charge of Britain's trade policies.
Family Life
Francis North was married two times. His first wife was Elizabeth Greville, whom he married in 1695.
Around 1703, he married his second wife, Alicia Brownlow.
His son, Francis North, became the 3rd Baron Guilford after him. This son later received an even higher title, becoming the 1st Earl of Guilford.
