Trelowarren House - the family home of the Vyvyans

Sir Francis Vyvyan (born 1575, died 1635) was an important English politician from Cornwall. His family lived at Trelowarren. Sometimes his last name is spelled Vivian. He was a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he helped make laws for the country.

Who Was Sir Francis Vyvyan?

Sir Francis Vyvyan was a notable figure in England during the early 1600s. He followed in his father's footsteps, taking on important roles in government and local leadership. His life shows us what it was like to be a public servant in those times.

Early Life and Family

Francis Vyvyan was the oldest son of Hannibal Vyvyan. His father was also an MP. Hannibal was also the High Sheriff of Cornwall and the Captain of St Mawes Castle. The High Sheriff was like a chief law enforcement officer for the county. The Captain of St Mawes Castle was in charge of a fort that protected the coast.

In 1603, Francis took over from his father. He became the Captain of St Mawes Castle himself. This was a very important job, as the castle guarded a key part of the coastline.

His Political Career

Sir Francis Vyvyan was elected to Parliament several times.

  • In 1604, he was an MP for the town of Fowey. This Parliament was sometimes called the "Blessed Parliament."
  • In 1614, he was an MP for St Mawes. This Parliament was known as the "Addled Parliament."

He also held other important positions:

  • From 1607 to 1608, he was briefly the Vice-Admiral for South Cornwall. A Vice-Admiral helped protect the seas and coasts. He took over this role after his father retired.
  • In 1617, he served as the High Sheriff of Cornwall, just like his father.
  • In 1618, he was given the title of "Sir" when he was knighted. This was a special honor from the King.

Later Life and Family

Later in his life, Sir Francis faced some challenges. He lost his job as Captain of St Mawes Castle in 1632.

Sir Francis Vyvyan was married twice. He had a son named Richard with his second wife, Loveday Connock. Richard was also knighted shortly before his father passed away in 1635. In 1645, Richard received an even higher honor. He was made a Baronet, which is a special hereditary title.
