Early Life and Family
Richard Vyvyan was the oldest son of Sir Francis Vyvyan. His father was a very important person in Cornwall, a county in England. Sir Francis was also a member of Parliament and a High Sheriff, which was a top official in the county.
Richard was from a place called Trelowarren in Cornwall. He became a knight in 1636, not long after his father passed away. Being knighted was a special honor given by the King.
A Career in Politics
Richard Vyvyan started his political journey in April 1640. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Penryn. This was for a short meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament.
Later that same year, in November 1640, he was elected as an MP again. This time, he represented Tregony in the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for many years.
Supporting the King
During the English Civil War, Richard Vyvyan was a strong supporter of King Charles I. Instead of staying with the Parliament in London, he joined the King's Parliament in Oxford.
He even helped the King by setting up a special mint in Truro in 1642-1643. A mint is a place where coins are made. He was in charge of this mint. When the mint moved to Exeter in September 1643, he continued to be its Master.
Because he supported the King, he was removed from the House of Commons in January 1644. But King Charles rewarded him for his loyalty. On 12 February 1645, the King made him a baronet. This was a special title that could be passed down in his family.
After the war, he had to pay a large fine of £600. His property was also taken over for a while.
Return to Public Life
After the King was restored to power in England, Richard Vyvyan returned to politics. This period is known as the Restoration.
In 1661, he tried to become an MP for St Mawes in the Cavalier Parliament. He was elected in a special election in 1663 and served as an MP until he died in 1665.
