Francis Wemyss-Charteris (born August 14, 1795 – died January 1, 1883) was a Scottish nobleman. He held important titles like the 9th Earl of Wemyss and 5th Earl of March. Being an "Earl" meant he was part of the noble class in Scotland. He was known for his public service and family life during the 1800s.
Early Life and Education
Francis Wemyss-Charteris was born on August 14, 1795. His parents were Francis Douglas, who was the 8th Earl of Wemyss, and Margaret Campbell. He had several siblings, including Lady Eleanor Charteris and Lady Katherine Charteris Wemyss.
He received his education at Christ Church, Oxford, which is a famous university in England.
Public Service and Career Highlights
Francis Wemyss-Charteris was involved in several important groups and roles.
From 1827 to 1830, he served as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. This is a top leadership role in a well-known fraternal organization called Freemasonry.
He also joined the Royal Company of Archers. This group acts as the Queen's ceremonial bodyguard in Scotland. He became a Lieutenant-General in this group in 1842.
When his father passed away in 1853, Francis inherited the titles of Earl of Wemyss and Earl of March. He then served as the Lord-Lieutenant of Peeblesshire from 1853 to 1880. A Lord-Lieutenant is the Queen's personal representative in a county or area.
Family Life
On August 22, 1817, Francis Wemyss-Charteris married Lady Louisa Bingham in Paris, France. Lady Louisa was the daughter of Richard Bingham, who was the 2nd Earl of Lucan.
Francis and Lady Louisa had six children together:
- Francis Richard Charteris (1818–1914), who later became the 10th Earl of Wemyss. He married Lady Anne Anson.
- Richard Charteris (1822–1874), who was a Lieutenant-Colonel. He married Lady Margaret Butler.
- Margaret Charteris-Wemyss-Douglas (1824–1836), who sadly passed away when she was young.
- Lady Anne Charteris (1829–1903), who married George Greville, the 4th Earl of Warwick, in 1852.
- Lady Louisa Wemyss-Charteris (1830–1920), who married William Wells in 1854. William Wells was a Member of Parliament (MP).
- Walter Charteris-Wemyss-Douglas, who was a Captain and died in 1854 during the Battle of Balaclava.
- Frederick William Charteris (1833–1887), who was also a Captain. He married Lady Louisa Keppel in 1864.
The family lived at 64 Queen Street in Edinburgh. This was one of the largest houses in Edinburgh's New Town.
Lady Wemyss passed away on April 16, 1882. Less than a year later, Lord Wemyss died on January 1, 1883.
