Francis West (born October 28, 1586 – died February 1633/1634) was an important leader in the early Colony of Virginia. He served as a Deputy Governor, helping to manage the colony in its early years.

Francis West was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, on October 28, 1586. He was one of four sons of Thomas West, 2nd Baron De La Warr and Anne Knollys. His family became very wealthy through their involvement with the Virginia colony.

Francis West had several brothers who also played big roles in the Virginia colony:

• His older brother, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, was a governor of the Virginia Company of London from 1610 to 1611.
• His younger brother, John West, served as the Acting Governor of Virginia from 1635 to 1637.
• Another brother, Nathaniel West, also lived in Virginia but passed away in 1623.

Francis West's Career in Virginia

Francis West traveled to Jamestown, Virginia, in the summer of 1609. He was part of Captain Christopher Newport's third voyage to the new colony.

Early Roles and Leadership

In 1609, Francis West was chosen to be part of the Governor's Council. This was a group of important people who advised the governor and helped run the colony. He stayed on the Council for the rest of his life. Even though he returned to England many times, he remained connected to Virginia.

In 1610, West returned to Jamestown. The colony was struggling and didn't have enough supplies. The colonists elected Francis West as their "President" for a short time. This happened when other high officials were away. From 1612 to 1617, he was the Commandant of Jamestown, meaning he was in charge of the town's defense and order.

Serving in Government

From July 30 to August 4, 1619, Francis West served in what would become the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. This was an important step in the colony's government.

In 1622, Captain West was named Admiral to New England. He worked with other leaders to manage the Council for New England's efforts in Massachusetts. Later, he served as Deputy Governor of Virginia from November 17, 1627, to March 5, 1629. He also held the title of Captain General of Virginia.

Francis West's Personal Life

Francis West was married three times during his life.

• His first wife was Margaret Whitney. She passed away within two years of their marriage.
• In March 1627, he married Temperance Flowerdew. She was the widow of Governor George Yeardley. Sadly, Temperance also died in December of the same year.
• His third wife was Jane Davye.

Francis West had one son, also named Francis West. In 1632, his home and land were located in Elizabeth Citie, Virginia.

Death and Legacy

Francis West likely passed away in February 1633 or 1634. His brother, John West, later became the temporary governor of Virginia. This happened after the colonists removed the royal governor, Sir John Harvey.
