Anne Knollys' Family and Life
Anne Knollys was the third daughter of Sir Francis Knollys. Her father was the Treasurer of the Royal Household for Queen Elizabeth I. This meant he managed the Queen's money and household affairs. Anne's mother was Lady Catherine Carey.
Anne's family had a special connection to the Queen. Her maternal grandparents were Sir William Carey and Mary Boleyn. Mary Boleyn was the sister of Anne Boleyn, who was the second wife of Henry VIII of England. This made Anne Knollys' mother, Catherine Carey, a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth I.
Anne also had an older sister named Lettice Knollys. Lettice was a chief Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth. This was a very close and important position. Lettice was also the mother of Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who was a favorite of the Queen for a time.
