Francisco de Asís de Icaza y Beña (born February 2, 1863, in Mexico City, Mexico – died May 28, 1925, in Madrid, Spain) was a Mexican poet, writer, and historian. He spent most of his adult life and career in Spain. He was the father of Carmen de Icaza, a well-known Spanish novelist.

Francisco Asís de Icaza y Beña was born on February 2, 1863. His parents were Ignacio de Icaza e Iturbe and María Tomasa Beña y García. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico.

When he was in his twenties, he started working for the Mexican government. He was sent to Madrid, Spain, as part of the Mexican embassy. Later, he became an ambassador for Mexico in both Germany and Spain. This means he represented his country in these foreign lands.

His Work as a Writer

Francisco de Icaza first became known for his poetry. He also gained attention for his book Examen de críticos (1894), which looked at other writers' works.

He wrote important books about famous Spanish authors. One of his most praised works was Novelas ejemplares de Cervantes (1901). In this book, he studied the writings of Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote. This work was very well received. It helped him become a member of the Ateneo de Madrid, a famous cultural group in Spain.

Icaza also wrote many other books about the history of literature. He was a special member of both the Mexican and Spanish Academies. These are important groups that promote language and literature.

Besides his own writings, Icaza also translated many books into Spanish. He translated works by authors like Nietzsche, Hebbel, Liliencron, and Dehmel.

Family Life

In Spain, Francisco de Icaza married Beatriz de León y Loynaz (1878–1971). She was born in La Habana and was related to a Spanish noble family. They had six children together. One of their children was the famous novelist Carmen de Icaza.
