Francisco Belaúnde Terry (born October 3, 1923 – died August 25, 2020) was a Peruvian politician. He was a member of the country's Congress. From 1980 to 1981, he served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies, which is like being the leader of one part of the Congress. His brother, Fernando Belaúnde, was even President of Peru two times! Francisco Belaúnde was part of the Popular Action political party. He passed away in 2020 when he was 96 years old.
About His Life
Francisco Belaúnde Terry was born in Lima, Peru, in 1923. He came from a family that was very involved in politics. His father, Rafael Belaunde Diez Canseco, was a government minister and even led the Council of Ministers (a group of top government officials) from 1945 to 1946.
His family had a long history of public service. His grandfather, Mariano A. Belaunde de la Torre, was the Minister of Finance around 1900. His great-grandfather, General Pedro Diez Canseco Corbacho, was an interim (temporary) president of Peru three times! Also, his uncle, Víctor Andrés Belaúnde Diez Canseco, was a famous thinker and diplomat. He even became the President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1959 and was Peru's Minister of Foreign Relations in 1957.
His Education
Francisco Belaúnde studied in many different countries, including France, the United States, Mexico, and Chile. He finished his high school studies at the Colegio Sagrados Corazones Recoleta. After that, he went to the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru to study law. Once he finished his studies, he worked as a lawyer in his own private practice.
He lived a long life and passed away on August 25, 2020, at the age of 96.
