Francisco Dueñas Díaz (born December 3, 1810 – died March 4, 1884) was an important politician from El Salvador. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as the President of El Salvador four different times.
Dueñas was known for strongly supporting the interests of the church. At one point, he had even taken vows to become a Dominican priest. However, when religious communities were closed in 1829, he left the monastery. He received special permission from the Pope to do so. Under his leadership, the church's influence grew stronger, and El Salvador saw many changes that favored conservative ideas.
Early Life and Family
Francisco Dueñas Díaz was born on December 3, 1810, in San Salvador, which is the capital city of El Salvador. His father was José Miguel Dueñas, and his mother was Secundina Díaz.
He married Teresa Dárdano on February 12, 1866. Their wedding ceremony was led by Bishop Tomás Pineda y Zaldaña. Francisco and Teresa had five children together: Francisco, Carlos, Miguel, Pablo, and Antonia.
His Time as President
Francisco Dueñas served as President of El Salvador on four separate occasions. His terms were:
- May 3, 1851, to January 30, 1852
- February 1, 1852, to February 1, 1854
- February 1, 1856, to February 12, 1856 (this was a temporary role)
- October 26, 1863, to April 15, 1871
