Francisco Galcerán de Lloris y de Borja (born in 1470 – died on July 22, 1506) was an important person in the Catholic Church. He was a cardinal, which is a high-ranking official, and a member of the famous Borgia family. He held many important positions in the Church, even though he never became a priest.

About Francisco

Francisco was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1470. He was related to two Popes! He was the grand-nephew of Pope Alexander VI and the nephew of Cardinal Juan de Borja Lanzol de Romaní, el mayor. His father was Pedro Jofre de Lloris, and his mother was Isabel de Borja y Navarro de Alpicat.

Francisco worked for Cardinal Rodrigo de Borja, who later became Pope Alexander VI. He held important jobs like Chamberlain, Prosecretary, and Treasurer. Later, he became the Treasurer-General for the Pope's financial office. He gained many Church titles and benefits, but these were mostly for his own gain, as he never took holy orders to become a priest.

Papal Elections

After Pope Alexander VI died, Francisco took part in two important elections for a new Pope. These elections are called papal conclaves.

  • He participated in the first conclave of 1503, which elected Pope Pius III. However, Pope Pius III died very soon after.
  • He then participated in the second conclave of 1503, which elected Pope Julius II.

In 1505, he changed his cardinal title to the Deaconry of Santa Maria Nuova. In 1506, he was made the Abbot of Santa Maria de Ripoll.
