Guiding Early Expeditions
Hosta guided several groups of explorers. His help was crucial because he knew the area well. He led the Simpson group in 1849, which was one of the first major expeditions to Chaco Canyon.
More Explorations
Years later, Hosta continued to share his knowledge. In 1874, he guided an expedition led by Dr. Oscar Lowe. Then, in 1877, he helped a famous photographer named William Henry Jackson. Jackson was so impressed by Hosta's skills that he named a mountain after him: Hosta Butte.
A Possible Earlier Journey
It's also thought that Francisco Hosta might have guided another important journey much earlier. In 1823, he may have helped José Antonio Vizcarra during a military trip against the Navajo people. During this trip, Vizcarra's group "re-discovered" Chaco Canyon, bringing it to the attention of more people.
