Early Life and First Drawings
Francisco Ibáñez was born in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15, 1936. This was just a few months before the start of the Spanish Civil War. His family was not rich, and he had three brothers and sisters.
Even as a kid, Ibáñez loved comic books and funny movies from the United States. When he was only eleven years old, in October 1947, he got his very first drawing published. It appeared in a magazine called Chicos.
Combining Work and Art
After finishing his basic schooling, Ibáñez studied accounting and banking. Between 1950 and 1957, he worked at a bank called Banco Español de Crédito. He started as a bellboy and later helped with money matters.
But he never stopped drawing! From 1952, he started drawing for magazines at the same time he worked at the bank. He drew for magazines like Nicolás, Chicolino, and La Risa. He created his first comic series during this time, including Kokolo and Haciendo el indio. The series Haciendo el indio became quite popular.
A Career in Comics
In the summer of 1957, Ibáñez realized he was earning more money from his drawings than from his bank job. So, he decided to become a full-time comic artist! He kept working with Editorial Marco and also joined a new magazine called Paseo infantil.
Joining Editorial Bruguera
In August 1957, Ibáñez started working with a very big publishing company called Editorial Bruguera. This company really needed new artists because some of their main ones had left. Ibáñez began by drawing funny single-page jokes for magazines like Pulgarcito. These jokes were often about a specific topic or sport.
A fellow comic artist, Armando Matías Guiu, explained that drawing these jokes was the first step. It helped artists get their own characters into the magazines. Ibáñez worked with Editorial Bruguera until 1985.
Creating Famous Characters
In 1958, Ibáñez's most famous characters, Mortadelo and Filemón, appeared for the first time. They were in the magazine Pulgarcito. After that, he created many other beloved characters.
Since 1988, Ibáñez drew six new Mortadelo and Filemón comic albums every year. Many of these stories included funny takes on current events and news.
