Don Francisco Marcos de Velasco y Alvear (born in Carasa, Spain, in 1633 and died in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1693) was an important Spanish military leader. He served as the governor and commander of the Antwerp Citadel, a strong fortress in the city of Antwerp.

Life of Francisco Velasco

Francisco Velasco came from a very old and respected Spanish noble family. His family was connected to Pedro Fernández de Velasco, a famous count. Francisco inherited the title of Lord of Pico de Velasco de Angustina.

When he was very young, in 1641, he became a Knight of Saint James. This was a special honor for brave people. He then started a career in the military.

In 1678, Francisco was sent to Antwerp. From 1679 to 1693, he was the governor of the city's citadel. A governor is like a leader in charge of a place. In 1684, the King of Spain gave him a new title. He became the 1st Marquess of Pico de Velasco de Angustina.

Velasco's Tomb

The Marquess is buried in Antwerp. His tomb is in the Church of St. Andrew's. This church was the local church for the people of the Citadel.

An amazing marble monument was made for his tomb. It was sculpted by an artist named Pieter Scheemaeckers. Later, this impressive monument was moved to the Saint James Church in Antwerp.
