Early Life and Education
Francisco Morales Bermúdez was born in Lima, Peru, on October 4, 1921. His father was an Army Colonel, also named Remigio Morales Bermúdez. His grandfather, also named Remigio Morales Bermúdez, was a former President of Peru.
He attended Colegio Inmaculada in Lima for most of his schooling. In 1939, he joined the Escuela Militar de Chorrillos, a military school. After graduating, he became an important member of the Center for Advanced Military Studies.
Career in Politics
Morales Bermúdez became a brigadier general in the army. His first political job was in 1968. He became the Minister of Economy and Finance under President Fernando Belaúnde. He resigned after only two months due to government issues.
Later in 1968, a military coup removed Belaúnde from power. General Juan Velasco then led the military government. Velasco asked Morales Bermúdez to return as Minister of Economy and Finance. In 1974, he left this role again. He was then appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the Peruvian Army. In 1975, he also became Velasco's prime minister and minister of war.
Leading Peru (1975–1980)
President Velasco's health was getting worse. So, Morales Bermúdez led a military takeover against him. On August 29, 1975, he became the new President of Peru. He led the country during a very difficult time with many economic problems.
His government changed direction from the previous leader's policies. He worked to move Peru away from military rule. He faced pressure from different groups. He tried to make political and economic changes.
In 1978, a special group called the Constituent Assembly was formed. This group created a new constitution for Peru. It replaced the old one from 1933. After elections in 1980, Morales Bermúdez gave power back to a civilian government. Fernando Belaúnde became president again. This ended 12 years of military rule in Peru.
After the Presidency (1980–2022)
After leaving office, Morales Bermúdez mostly stayed out of the public eye. He sometimes gave speeches about the Peruvian army.
In 1985, he tried to run for president again. However, he did not win many votes.
