Francisco "Pancho" Salvador Osorto Guardado (born March 20, 1957 – died February 26, 2023) was a talented football player from El Salvador. He was known for playing as a defender, which means he helped protect his team's goal from opponents. Pancho played for several clubs in El Salvador and also represented his country on the international stage, even playing in the FIFA World Cup.
Club Career
Pancho Osorto started his football journey with his hometown club, Municipal Limeño. He played for them from 1972 to 1976. Later, he returned to Municipal Limeño in 1983 and helped them win the Liga B league title that same year.
He also played for other important clubs in El Salvador. From 1976 to 1977, he was with LA Firpo. Then, from 1977 to 1982, he played for Santiagueño. With Santiagueño, he achieved a big success by winning the Primera División title in the 1979-1980 season. Before ending his career, he also played for CESSA from 1987 to 1988.
Playing for El Salvador
Nicknamed Pancho, Osorto was a key player for the El Salvador national team. He played in five matches for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
His biggest moment came when he played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup held in Spain. This was a huge achievement for him and his country. In 1977, he even scored a goal for El Salvador in a big 8–0 win against Nicaragua during the qualification games for the 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Life and Legacy
Francisco Osorto was married to Evelyn Rubio, and they had four sons together. One of his sons, Heraldo Salvador Osorto, also became a professional football player, following in his father's footsteps. Heraldo played for clubs like Atlético Marte and San Salvador.
Pancho Osorto passed away on February 26, 2023, at the age of 65, due to a health problem with his liver. He is remembered as a dedicated player and a national hero in Salvadoran football.
