Francisco Ruiz Gijón (born in Utrera, Spain, in 1653 – died in Seville, Spain, in 1720) was a famous Spanish sculptor. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time when art was very dramatic and detailed.
Francisco Ruiz Gijón was part of the Andalusian school of sculpture. This was a group of artists in the Andalusia region of Spain who had a special style. He learned from another sculptor named Andrés Cansino. Most of his art was created in the city of Seville.
What Francisco Ruiz Gijón Created
Francisco Ruiz Gijón mostly made religious sculptures. He created many beautiful pieces for Catholic churches and religious groups called brotherhoods. His most important works are connected to the Holy Week celebrations in Seville. During Holy Week, people carry large floats with sculptures through the streets.
Famous Sculptures
Here are some of his well-known sculptures:
- Expiring Christ, known as El Cachorro (1682): This is one of his most famous works. The face of this sculpture looks like a real person! It's a portrait of a well-known gypsy from a neighborhood called Triana. "El Cachorro" means "The Little Puppy" in Spanish.
- Sainte Anne: This sculpture can be found in the Church of Santa María Magdalena.
- Simon of Cyrene (1687): This sculpture is in the Church of San Isidoro.
- Jesus carrying the cross (1688): He made this for the Brotherhood of San Isidoro. Some parts of this work are now lost.
- Four Evangelists (around 1700): These sculptures are believed to be his work and are with the Brotherhood of El Museo.
Processional Floats
Francisco Ruiz Gijón also designed and built large wooden platforms, called pasos, that carry the sculptures during the Holy Week parades.
- The paso for Jesús del Gran Poder (1692): This was a platform for a very important sculpture.
- The paso for Cristo del Amor (1694): This platform is in the Church of The Saviour.
