Francisco de Moura Corte Real (born 13 December 1621 – died 26 November 1675) was an important Portuguese nobleman. He held powerful positions during his life. He served as the Viceroy (a ruler representing the king) of Spanish Sardinia. He was also the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, which was a part of the Spanish Empire.

Early Life and Family

Francisco de Moura was born into a noble Portuguese family. His father was Manuel de Moura, 2nd Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo. His father had also been a Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1644 to 1647. Francisco's mother was Leonor de Melo. The family was part of the well-known Corte-Real family.

Serving the King

Francisco de Moura began his career serving King Philip III of Portugal. He was a "Gentleman of the Chamber," which meant he was a close attendant to the King. Later, he became a member of the King's council of state. This council helped the King make important decisions. In 1651, he also served as an ambassador, representing his country in Vienna.

Important Roles

Francisco de Moura held several very important jobs:

  • He was made the Duke of Nochera in 1656.
  • From 1657 to 1661, he was the Viceroy of Sardinia. As Viceroy, he governed this island for the Spanish king.
  • From 1664 to 1668, he served as the Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. This was a very significant role, as he was in charge of a large and important territory.

The War of Devolution

During Francisco de Moura's time as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, a war broke out. This was called the War of Devolution. France invaded the Spanish Netherlands. At this time, Spain was not very strong. Because of this, the Spanish forces could not offer much resistance to the French army. People even called the French invasion "a military stroll" because it seemed so easy for them.

Later Life and Death

After his time as Governor, Francisco de Moura was appointed as the Caballerizo mayor to the King. This was a high-ranking position in the royal household. He passed away in Madrid in December 1675.
