Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Francisco de Trillo y Figueroa (born around 1618 or 1620, died 1680) was a Spanish writer. He was known as a poet and a historian. He followed a special writing style called Culteranismo, which was part of the Baroque art period. He wrote poems for weddings (called epithalamiums) and praise poems (called panegyrics). Some people think he might have influenced another famous writer, Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Life of Francisco de Trillo y Figueroa

Francisco de Trillo y Figueroa was born in a place called San Pedro de Cerbás, in Ares, Spain. His parents were José de Trillo and Juana Flores de León. He was born sometime between 1618 and 1620.

When Francisco was about 11 years old, his family moved to Granada. This happened because his uncle left an inheritance for his father. In Granada, Francisco and his brother, Juan, went to school and studied many subjects, including literature. Francisco started writing poetry at a young age. This early start helped him become very good at writing funny and critical poems, known as satire.

His brother, Juan, became interested in family histories. He published books about family trees, like Origen de la casa de Tobar y árbol genealógico de don Francisco Cañavera in 1662. He also wrote Noticia de la sucesión de doña María Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1664.

Military Service and Return to Spain

Francisco de Trillo y Figueroa served in the military in Italy. After his time in the army, he came back to Spain. Once he was home, he spent his time writing poetry and studying history.

Family Life

On 20 November 1640, Francisco married Leonor de Trillo y Figueroa. She was a distant relative of his. They had three sons:

  • Juan Francisco, born on 2 February 1643
  • José, born on 16 September 1645
  • Diego, born on 29 February 1648

Later in his life, in 1678, Francisco was the godfather at his grandson Diego's baptism.

Friends and Final Years

Francisco was a close friend of another writer named Pedro Soto de Rojas [es]. Francisco even wrote notes for Pedro's book, Paraíso cerrado para muchos, jardines abiertos para pocos.

Records show that a "Francisco de Trillos y Figueroa" was buried in the Santiago parish in Granada on 25 October 1680. This matches the year that sources say he died.
