Life and Work

Early Life and Education

Franck Balandier was born in Suresnes, France, on July 11, 1952. He grew up in Paris, which later became the setting for many of his stories. When he was 14 years old, he published his very first poem in a magazine called Première Chance.

Working as an Educator

After finishing school, Balandier decided to become an educator. He taught at the Fleury-Mérogis Prison. There, he met another educator named Patrick Chamoiseau. They both loved writing and became good friends.

Together, they helped create the first radio station broadcast from a French prison. It was called Radio D2. This radio station quickly became very popular. Many famous artists, like the band Trust and singers Maxime Le Forestier and Georges Moustaki, even appeared on the show.

Writing and Filmmaking

Franck Balandier wrote his first novel in 1988. Besides writing, he also worked for the French Ministry of Justice. He made about 40 short films and videos.

One of his notable works was Sidamour. This report featured the singer Barbara. She talked about a concert for women at the Fresnes Prison. She also discussed the importance of understanding HIV/AIDS with a professor from the Pasteur Institute.

In his later years, Balandier spent most of his time writing. He also led workshops to help others learn how to write.
