Franco Pinna, a famous Italian photographer.

Franco Pinna (1925–1978) was a famous Italian photographer. He lived in the middle of the 20th century. He was known for his black and white photos. He was also a key artist in a style called neorealism. This style focused on showing real life as it was.

His Life and Work

Franco Pinna was born in La Maddalena, Italy. This was on July 29, 1925.

In 1952, he moved to Rome. For a short time, he worked making documentary films. After that, he helped start a group called Fotografi Associati. He worked with other photographers like Plinio De Martiis and Caio Mario Garrubba. This group sadly closed in 1954 because of money problems.

Franco Pinna also traveled with Ernesto De Martino. Ernesto was an anthropologist. This means he studied human societies and cultures. They went on research trips to southern Italy. They visited places like Lucania (in 1952, 1956, 1959) and Salento (in 1959). Franco Pinna took many important and beautiful photos during these trips.

In 1959, he published his first book. It was called La Sila. Later, in 1961, he released another book. This one was titled Sardegna una civiltà di pietra. This means Sardinia, a stone civilization. His photos were also featured in many popular magazines. These included Life, Stern, Sunday Times, Vogue, Paris Match, Epoca, L'espresso, and Panorama.

Starting in 1965, Pinna became the main photographer for Federico Fellini. Fellini was a very famous film director. Franco Pinna took photos on the sets of Fellini's movies. These included Giulietta degli spiriti (1965) and Fellini's Casanova (1976). He also published photo books inspired by Fellini's films. Some of these were I Clowns and Fellini's Film.

Franco Pinna sadly passed away suddenly in Rome. This was on April 2, 1978.
