Francesco Caruso (born 1 January 1968) is a leading Australian chemical engineer. He is a professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He also holds a special research position with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Professor Caruso is also a deputy director at the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence. This center focuses on combining biology and tiny technology called Nanoscience. His work helps us understand and create new materials.

His Early Studies

Frank Caruso earned his PhD degree in 1994 from the University of Melbourne. A PhD is the highest university degree you can get. For his PhD, he studied how tiny particles called amphiphiles move. He looked at how they spread out on very thin layers of water and air. These layers are called monolayers and Langmuir–Blodgett films.

His Work and Discoveries

After getting his PhD, Professor Caruso did more research. He worked at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). This is a big science agency in Australia.

From 1997 to 2002, he worked in Berlin, Germany. He was a research fellow with a special scholarship. He also led a research team at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. This is a famous science institute.

Since 2003, he has been a professor at the University of Melbourne. He has received important research grants, like the ARC Federation and ARC Australian Laureate Fellowships. These grants help him do his important scientific work.

In 2009, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. This is a high honor for top scientists in Australia. In 2013, he won the Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. This award recognized his great leadership in the science world.

Professor Caruso has written over 400 scientific papers. These papers have been "peer-reviewed." This means other scientists have checked his work carefully before it was published. In 2014, he was named one of the "World's Most Influential Scientific Minds." This shows how important his research is globally.

He is also an executive editor for a science journal called Chemistry of Materials. He helps decide which new research papers get published. He also advises ten other scientific journals.

His research includes working with "thin films." These are super-thin layers of materials. His lab discovered something new called "metal-phenolic networks." These networks are special materials that can be used for many things.
