Frank Craig was an American boxer. He was born on April 1, 1868. Some records say he was born in Columbus, Georgia. Other records suggest New York City or Columbus, Ohio. He was known as "The Harlem Coffee Cooler." Craig was a smart and quick fighter. He weighed between 153 and 169 pounds. He fought as a middleweight and light-heavyweight. He became the world's colored middleweight champion.
Becoming a Champion
Frank Craig wanted to win the colored middleweight championship. This was a special boxing title for non-white boxers during that time. He first fought the champion, Joe Butler, on March 18, 1893. This fight took place in Philadelphia. Craig lost in the second round.
They had a rematch for the title on February 20, 1894. This fight was also in Philadelphia. This time, Craig won! He defeated Joe Butler in the fourth round. With this victory, Frank Craig became the new World Colored Middleweight Champion.
After the Title
After winning the championship, Frank Craig did not defend his title. This meant the title became "vacant," or empty. Later that same year, Craig moved to London. He started fighting in Great Britain in October.
He also competed for the middleweight championship of England. On October 14, 1895, he lost to Dan Creedon. But Craig kept fighting. On November 24, 1898, he won the English title. He defeated George Chrisp with a K.O. in the 13th round.
