About the Frank L. Dingley House

The Dingley House sits on the north side of Court Street. This is a quiet neighborhood just west of downtown Auburn. It is a large brick building with two and a half stories.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house has a special roof called a mansard roof. This type of roof allows for a full third floor inside. The roof is made of slate. Two brick chimneys stick out from the roof. There is also a tower on the front of the house that has a mansard roof too.

The main entrance of the house faces east. From here, you can look down over Auburn and Lewiston. A porch with fancy decorations runs along this side of the house. It has pretty wooden posts.

Dingley's Impact on News

Frank Dingley and his brother bought the newspaper in 1861. They quickly changed it into a daily newspaper. Dingley was very smart about using new technology. He was one of the first to use the telegraph to get news reports quickly. The telegraph sent messages over long distances using electric signals. This helped the newspaper share news much faster. He also helped the newspaper grow a lot in 1898.

Supporting New Ideas

Frank Dingley also loved art and supported local artists. He helped F. E. Stanley with his work. Stanley was famous for making the Stanley Steamer automobile. This was a car that ran on steam power.
