Frank Merrill Caldwell (born November 8, 1866 – died March 8, 1937) was an important American general who served during World War I. He held the high rank of Brigadier general in the United States Army.

Growing Up and Family

Frank Caldwell was born in Rochester, New York. He went to a special school for army officers called the United States Military Academy in 1890. After graduating, he joined the army as an officer in the Third Cavalry.

He married Mary Hay on June 6, 1894. They had three daughters. One of their daughters, also named Mary Hay, became a famous actress.

Military Career

During the Spanish–American War, Frank Caldwell served as a lieutenant colonel. He was part of the Fourth Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment.

He continued his military education, graduating from the Army School of the Line in 1909. He also finished the Army Staff College in 1910. From 1916 to early 1918, he worked in the Inspector General's Department, checking on how the army was doing.

World War I Service

On April 12, 1918, Caldwell was promoted to Brigadier general. This is a very important leadership position in the army. From May to October 1918, he led the 75th Infantry Brigade, which was part of the 38th Infantry Division. This division was part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) fighting in World War I.

After that, he commanded the 83rd Infantry Brigade. This brigade was part of the 42nd Infantry Division, and he led them until 1919.

Later Commands and Retirement

Caldwell returned to the Inspector General's Department from 1920 to 1921. He then became the Chief of Staff for the Sixth Corps Area, serving from 1921 to 1924.

From 1926 to 1927, Caldwell was in charge of the harbor defenses in the Philippines. His last command was leading the harbor defenses along the Pacific coast. He held this position until November 30, 1931, when he retired from the army.

Death

Frank Caldwell passed away at the age of seventy on March 8, 1937. He died in San Francisco, California.
