Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Frank R. Bowerman Landfill is a very large place where trash is buried. It is located in Orange County, California, near the Santa Ana Mountains. This landfill opened in 1990. You can find it between Limestone Canyon Regional Park and State Route 241.

It is one of the biggest landfills in California. It is also the ninth largest in the entire United States. This huge site holds about 31 million tons of waste. That's a lot of trash!

Who Was Frank R. Bowerman?

The landfill is named after Professor Frank R. Bowerman. He was a smart man who taught about protecting the environment at the University of Southern California. He also led important groups like the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. These groups are made up of experts who work to keep our planet clean and healthy.

Turning Trash into Energy

The Frank R. Bowerman Landfill is special because it has a unique project. It is the first place in the world to turn landfill gas into liquid natural gas (LNG) on a large scale.

When trash breaks down in a landfill, it creates a gas. This gas can be harmful to the environment. But at this landfill, companies like Prometheus Energy and Montauk Energy collect the gas. They then clean and process it to turn it into a useful fuel called liquid natural gas. This means they are using something that would otherwise be wasted to create energy!
