Franklin Canyon, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Franklin Canyon is a small area in Contra Costa County, California, not officially part of a city. It's located just outside Martinez, California. This place got its name from Edward Franklin, a pioneer from San Francisco. He came to California from England in 1849 during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush.

What is Franklin Canyon?

Franklin Canyon is a natural valley or "canyon." It sits next to a long hill called Franklin Ridge. This ridge eventually leads to a special spot known as Mount Wanda. The area also includes the Franklin Hills.

A Bit of History

Edward Franklin, who the canyon is named after, bought an important building called the Martinez Adobe ranch house. He purchased this two-story house on October 6, 1853. The Martinez Adobe is a very old and special building. It is even recognized as a California Historical Landmark, number 511.

The Martinez Adobe

The Martinez Adobe was originally owned by Vicente J. Martinez. Later, in 1875, a man named Dr. John T. Strenzel bought the property from Edward Franklin. Dr. Strenzel was the father-in-law of a very famous naturalist, John Muir. John Muir was known for his work in protecting nature and helping to create national parks.

A special plaque was put up at the Martinez Adobe on April 17, 1955. The Contra Costa County Historical Society dedicated this plaque. It marks the building as California State Registration No. 511.
