Frankville is a small community in southeastern Winneshiek County, Iowa, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

History of Frankville

Frankville got its name from Francis Teabout. He settled there in 1851. A main road was built right through the village. This helped Frankville grow and become successful early on.

Early Businesses and Growth

In its first years, Frankville had important places. There was a saw mill, which cut wood. There was also a grist mill, which ground grain into flour. A hotel and a Presbyterian Church were also part of the community.

Railroad's Impact

However, the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad chose a path south of Frankville. This decision limited how much the community could grow. Without the railroad, Frankville's economy did not expand as much as other towns.

The Frankville School

The Frankville School was built in 1872. It taught students for many years. The school stayed open until 1962. After it closed, the building became a museum. In 1978, the school was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical sites in the United States.
