Frederick Thomas Winter, CBE (20 September 1926 – 5 April 2004) was a famous British horseman. He was a top National Hunt racing jockey and later a very successful horse trainer. He is the only person to have won the three biggest jump races in Britain as both a jockey and a trainer. These races are the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, and the Grand National.
Fred Winter was named the British jump racing Champion Jockey four times. Later, he became the British jump racing Champion Trainer eight times. He won the Grand National four times. He won it twice as a jockey, riding Sundew in 1957 and Kilmore in 1962. He then won it twice as a trainer, with Jay Trump in 1965 and Anglo in 1966.

Fred Winter's Jockey Career
Fred Winter was an amazing jockey. He rode a record 923 winners in National Hunt races. These are races where horses jump over fences or hurdles. He retired from riding in 1964.
Mandarin's Famous Race
One of his most famous wins was on a horse named Mandarin. This happened in the 1962 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris race in France. During the race, Fred Winter was not feeling well. Also, the horse's bit (part of the bridle in its mouth) broke. Mandarin even got a bit injured in the last half-mile. Despite all these problems, Fred Winter still managed to win! Many people say this was one of the greatest rides ever.
Fred Winter's Training Career
After retiring as a jockey, Fred Winter became a horse trainer. He trained horses at Uplands stables in Lambourn, Berkshire, from 1964 to 1988. His first horse to run and win was Jay Trump in 1964.
Champion Trainer Titles
Fred Winter was a champion trainer eight times. He won this title in the seasons from 1970–71 to 1974–75. He also won it in 1976–77, 1977–78, and 1984–85. His horses won a total of 1,557 races in Britain during his 24 years as a trainer. His best season was in 1975–76, when his horses won 99 races.
Major Race Wins as a Trainer
Fred Winter trained many horses to win important races.
- Grand National: He won this famous race with Jay Trump (1965) and Anglo (1966).
- Cheltenham Gold Cup: He won this prestigious race with Midnight Court (1978).
- Champion Hurdle: His horses Bula (1971, 1972), Lanzarote (1974), and Celtic Shot (1988) all won this race.
- Champion Chase: Crisp won this race for him in 1971.
- King George VI Chase: He won this race twice as a trainer.
Cheltenham Festival Success
The Cheltenham Festival is a very important horse racing event. Fred Winter had huge success there. He won 45 races at the festival in total. He won 17 as a jockey and 28 as a trainer. There is even a race named after him at the festival, called the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle.
Awards and Recognition
Fred Winter was honored for his achievements. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1963. This is a special award given by the British monarch for great achievements.
