Freddie Little's Boxing Journey
Freddie Little started his professional boxing career in 1957. He quickly became a strong fighter. He aimed for the world title in the light middleweight division.
First Title Challenges
In 1967, Freddie Little fought for the World light middleweight title. He faced Ki-Soo Kim. It was a very close fight. Freddie lost by a "split decision," meaning the judges were divided. Some thought he won, others thought Kim won.
In 1968, he got another chance at the title. He fought against Sandro Mazzinghi. During this fight, Mazzinghi got cuts above both his eyes. The fight had to stop. The officials decided it was a "no-contest." This means the fight didn't count as a win or loss for either boxer. Usually, if a fight stops because of an injury like that, the person who caused the injury (or was winning) would win by technical knockout.
Becoming a World Champion
Freddie Little didn't give up. In 1969, he finally won the World light middleweight title! He beat Stanley Hayward by a decision. This made him the undisputed champion. "Undisputed" means he was recognized as the best by all major boxing organizations.
He successfully defended his title two times. This means he won two more fights while still holding the championship belt. However, in 1970, he lost his title to Carmelo Bossi. Freddie Little retired from boxing in 1972.
