Frederick A. Young (born October 9, 1902 – died December 1, 1998) was a famous British cinematographer. A cinematographer is the person in charge of the camera and lighting on a film set. They make sure the movie looks amazing! Freddie Young was often called F. A. Young.
He is most famous for his work on three big movies directed by David Lean: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Ryan's Daughter (1970). For each of these films, he won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. This is one of the highest honors in filmmaking!
Freddie Young was also the first British cinematographer to film using CinemaScope. This was a special way of filming that made movies look much wider on screen. He also helped write a book called The Work of the Motion Picture Cameraman in 1972.
During World War II, Young served as a captain in the British Army. He was the chief cameraman for the Army's film unit, helping to record important events.
In 2003, a group of international cinematographers voted Freddie Young as one of the ten most important cinematographers ever. This shows how much his work influenced others in the film world. In 1984, when he was 82 years old, Young directed his only film, Arthur's Hallowed Ground. It was made for television and starred Jimmy Jewel.
