Freddrenna Lyle became an alderman on February 8, 1998. She was chosen by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to finish the term of the previous alderman, John O. Steele. After that, the people of the 6th ward voted for her to keep her job. She was re-elected in 1999, 2003, and 2007.

As an alderman, she worked on several important committees. These included committees for the city's budget, finances, parks, and public safety. She also worked on rules and ethics for the city council. In 2011, she ran for re-election but lost to Roderick Sawyer in a close second round of voting, called a runoff election.

Becoming a Judge

After her time as an alderman, Freddrenna Lyle continued to serve the community. She advised the Black Caucus of the City Council on how to redraw the city's ward boundaries. This process is called redistricting.

Later in 2011, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed her to be a judge. She filled a vacant position in the Circuit Court of Cook County. In 2014, she tried to become a judge for a higher court, the state appellate court. However, she did not win the primary election for that position.
