Early Life and Education
Freddrenna Lyle has lived in the Park Manor neighborhood of Chicago for over 45 years. She went to Park Manor Elementary School. Later, she attended South Shore High School.
She earned her first college degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After that, she studied law at John Marshall Law School. She became a lawyer. Before her appointment as a judge, she worked as a private attorney.
Public Service Roles
Freddrenna Lyle has held many important public service roles. She was the President of the Cook County Bar Association. This is a group for lawyers in Cook County. She also served on the board of the National Bar Association.
Lyle was a member of the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness. She also helped lead the Lawyer’s Committee for Harold Washington. She was part of Governor Blagojevich’s team when he first took office.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed Freddrenna Lyle as an alderman. This happened on February 8, 1998. She filled a vacant spot for the 6th ward. She was re-elected for full terms in 1999, 2003, and 2007.
In 2006, she was also elected as the Democratic committeeman for her ward. As an alderman, Lyle worked on five important committees. These included Budget, Finance, and Parks and Recreation. She also served on License and Consumer Protection, and Traffic and Public Safety. Her last committee was Rules and Ethics.
In the 2011 election, Lyle ran for re-election. She lost to Roderick Sawyer in a close runoff election. A runoff election is a second election. It happens when no candidate wins a clear majority in the first round.
Becoming a Judge
After her time as an alderman, Lyle became a legal advisor. She helped the Council's Black Caucus. This group was working on the redistricting process. Redistricting is when the boundaries of voting areas are redrawn. This happens for Chicago's 50 wards.
Later that year, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Lyle to a new role. She became a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County. This position became open when Judge Michael Stuttley retired.
In 2014, Lyle tried to become a judge for a state appellate court. She ran in the Democratic primary election. A primary election is how political parties choose their candidates. However, she did not win this election.
