Fredebal facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fredebal, also known as Fredbal or Fredbalus, was a king of the Vandals, an ancient Germanic people, during the 5th century. He was a leader of the Siling Vandals, a specific group within the larger Vandal kingdom.

Who Was Fredebal?

Fredebal was a king of the Siling Vandals. The Vandals were a powerful group of people who moved across Europe during the time of the Roman Empire. They were known for their military strength and for establishing kingdoms in different areas. Fredebal led his people in a region called Baetica, which is now part of modern-day Spain.

The Capture of Fredebal

In the year 416 CE, something important happened to King Fredebal. He was captured by Wallia, who was the king of the Visigoths. The Visigoths were another strong Germanic group, often rivals or allies of the Vandals.

Wallia captured Fredebal in Baetica. The historical records say that Fredebal was taken prisoner "without any conflict" and "by a trick." This means there wasn't a big battle. Instead, Wallia used a clever plan to capture Fredebal without fighting. At this time, Wallia and the Visigoths were working for the Roman Emperor Honorius. This was called being in "imperial service," meaning they were allies of the Roman Empire and helped them with military tasks.

After his capture, Fredebal was sent to Roman Emperor Honorius. The emperor was living in Ravenna, a city in Italy that was an important center for the Western Roman Empire. What happened to Fredebal after he was handed over to the emperor is not clearly known from historical records.

Historical Records

Historians learn about Fredebal from ancient writings. Two important sources are:

  • Hydatius: A bishop and historian who wrote a chronicle (a record of events).
  • Chronicle of Fredegar: Another historical text that provides information about this period.
