The Frederick C. Bogk House is a special home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is the only single-family house that famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed in the city. Mr. Bogk, who owned the house, was an alderman (a local government official, like a city council member) and also worked for a paint company. This house shows off Wright's unique "Prairie School" style, looking very strong and solid.

What Makes the Bogk House Special?

Outside Look: Japanese Influence

The outside of the Bogk House is very interesting. It has light brown brick columns and special windows made of leaded art glass. These are topped with decorative concrete under wide eaves (the parts of the roof that hang over the walls) and a low, sloped roof. This design reminds people of the Imperial Hotel in Japan, which Frank Lloyd Wright was building at the same time. The way the house balances straight horizontal and vertical lines also shows a strong Japanese influence.

Inside the Bogk House

The main entrance to the house is not at the front, but on the side, opening onto the driveway. Inside, the first floor has rooms that flow smoothly into each other, all under a low ceiling. The living room stretches across the front of the house. A few steps up from the living room, you'll find the dining room at the back right.

There was even a bedroom for the maid above the attached garage. This room sticks out a bit from the main rectangular shape of the house. Upstairs, there are four more bedrooms and a sitting room.

Unique Details and Design

Throughout the house, you'll see tall, narrow windows made of leaded glass. These windows are not just for looking outside; they are also used as part of the design. You can find similar glass panels built into the brick walls inside, with lights behind them.

In the living room, there's a tiled pond for goldfish against one wall. Above it, there's a special plaque with pictures of cranes. Many parts of the house, like the light fixtures, were built right into the design. Some furniture, such as desks and bookshelves, is also built-in. While most of the other furniture isn't the original, it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Even the carpet is a copy of Wright's first design for the house!
