Discovering the Frederick Fabing House

This house, built in 1859, stands out in Fremont. It's a great example of a building from the past. The house is important because of its interesting design and the person who lived there.

Who Was Frederick Fabing?

Frederick Fabing was born in 1832. He became one of the most important businessmen in Sandusky County. When he was 30, he and three friends bought a company that made gas and did plumbing. They worked hard and made the company very successful.

Fabing worked at this company for almost 30 years. He started as a supervisor and eventually became the president! He was a true leader in the business world of his time.

What Makes the House Special?

Frederick Fabing had this house built in 1859, even before he joined the gas company. It is three stories tall and made of brick. This house is one of the most unique buildings in Fremont.

Many old buildings in Fremont were built later, in simpler styles. But the Fabing House shows off a special style called Second Empire architecture from the 1850s. This makes it look very different from other buildings around it.

Some cool features of the house include:

  • A square tower with a fancy mansard roof.
  • A decorative piece above the door called an overdoor.
  • A large, detailed cornice with small block-like decorations called dentils.
  • Beautiful metalwork and special windows that stick out from the roof, called dormer windows.
  • A decorative band of carvings called a frieze.
  • Fancy decorations above the windows, known as hoodmolds.

A Historic Landmark

Later on, the Fabing House was not just a home. It also became an office for a local doctor.

In 1983, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings in the United States. It was chosen because of its special architecture and because it was the home of a very important local person. The Frederick Fabing House is one of thirteen historic sites in Sandusky County on this list.
