Frederick Edgar Barwick Hulton-Sams (born in Emberton on 23 November 1882 – died at Hooge on 31 July 1915) was an Anglican priest. He lived and worked in the early 1900s.

Who Was Frederick Hulton-Sams?

Frederick Hulton-Sams was a unique person. He was known for being a priest who also loved boxing. His life took him from England to Australia. Later, he served as a soldier during World War I.

Early Life and Education

Frederick went to Harrow, a famous school in England. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he showed his athletic side. He won the University Boxing Championship three times! He won in 1901, 1902, and 1904.

Becoming a Priest

After his studies, Frederick decided to become a priest. He was first made a deacon in 1905. A deacon is a church helper who can perform some religious duties. He then became a full priest in 1908. His first job as a priest was at St Paul's Church in Balsall Heath.

The Fighting Parson

Frederick then traveled all the way to Australia. There, he joined a group called the Bush Brotherhood. These priests worked in remote, rural areas. They helped people who lived far from towns and churches.

Frederick became very well-known in Australia. After he finished preaching a sermon, he would often offer to have a friendly boxing match with someone from the crowd! This unusual habit earned him a special nickname: "The Fighting Parson." It showed his unique way of connecting with people.

Serving in World War I

When World War I began, Frederick wanted to help. He tried to become an Army Chaplain. Chaplains are priests who serve in the military. However, he could not get a chaplaincy role.

So, Frederick decided to join the army as a regular soldier. He enlisted with the 3rd Bedfordshires. Later, in November, he became an officer. He was given a special rank in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Sadly, Frederick Hulton-Sams died in battle at Hooge on 31 July 1915.
