Frederick William Dobson was a very brave English soldier. He was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest and most important award for courage. It is given to soldiers who show amazing bravery against the enemy. It can be given to British and Commonwealth forces. Dobson was born on November 9, 1886, and passed away on November 15, 1935.
A Hero in World War I
Frederick Dobson was 27 years old during World War I. He was a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards. This was a famous part of the British Army. He earned his Victoria Cross for an incredible act of bravery. This happened during the First Battle of the Aisne.
His Amazing Bravery
On September 28, 1914, Private Dobson was in Chavonne, France. This area was under heavy enemy fire. He saw two wounded soldiers. They were lying out in the open. It was very dangerous to reach them.
Dobson bravely volunteered to go help them. He crawled across the open ground. The enemy could see him clearly. He found one soldier had died. The other was wounded. Dobson quickly treated the wounded soldier's injuries. Then, he crawled back to his own lines. He returned with another soldier and a stretcher. Together, they put the wounded man on the stretcher. They then dragged him back to safety.
After His Heroic Act
Frederick Dobson later became a lance-corporal. His Victoria Cross medal is now on display. You can see it at The Guards Regimental Headquarters. This is located at Wellington Barracks in London.
Remembering a Hero
The United Kingdom has a special way to remember its heroes. They place memorial stones for soldiers who won the Victoria Cross during World War I. These stones are placed in the soldiers' birthplaces.
Frederick Dobson was born in Ovingham, Northumberland. On September 27, 2014, a special church service was held there. Northumberland County Council organized the event. They unveiled a VC Memorial Stone for Frederick Dobson. It was a way to honor his incredible bravery.
