A Landmark Building

Fredericton City Hall is more than just an office building. It's a special place that tells a lot about the city's history.

National Historic Site Status

On November 23, 1984, Fredericton City Hall was named a National Historic Site of Canada. This means it's recognized as a very important historical place for the whole country. It got this special title because of its impressive look and all the different things it has been used for over the years. These uses show how important the building is to the people of Fredericton.

Oldest City Hall in Atlantic Canada

Did you know that Fredericton City Hall is the oldest city hall in Atlantic Canada that is still used for city business? This means it has been the main place for city leaders to work and make decisions for a very long time.

A Market in the Basement

One unique thing about this building is that its basement used to be a market! Before 1951, people would buy and sell goods there. It was quite unusual for a city hall to also have a market in its basement back in the late 1800s. This makes Fredericton City Hall even more special.

Police Headquarters

For many years, the Fredericton City Hall was also home to the city's police force. From 1883 until 1971, the Fredericton Police had their main office right here in the building.
