The History of Fredonia
From the very beginning, Fredonia was an important place for education and trade in the northeast part of Chambers County. It was a central spot where people came to learn and to buy and sell goods.
Early Days and Businesses
The town officially became a town on September 29, 1853. Back then, it had many different businesses. There was even a factory that made jugs! You could also find hotels, taverns (places to eat and drink), a blacksmith shop (where metal items were made), and a tan yard (where animal hides were turned into leather).
Fredonia was also home to the first Methodist Church in Chambers County. A school called the Southern Military was started in the village by the Alabama State Legislature. However, this school had to close because of the American Civil War.
Fredonia's Town Status
For a while, Fredonia lost its official town status. This happened in October 2008 when the Chambers County Commission asked the court to remove Fredonia's town charter. A charter is like a special permission that allows a place to be an official town. The court agreed, and Fredonia was no longer an official town.
Getting Town Status Back
However, many people in Fredonia wanted their town status back. They formed a group called "Free Fredonia Community." This group started raising money and hired a lawyer to help. They filed an appeal to reverse the court's decision.
While they waited for the court case, an election took place. Some new commissioners were elected who also believed Fredonia should get its town status back. In July 2011, the Chambers County Commission voted to reverse the earlier decision. On July 26, 2011, the court officially gave Fredonia its town status back.
