Playing for Clubs
Starting Out and Saint-Étienne
Fredy Guarín was born in Puerto Boyacá, Colombia. By 2005, he was already a regular player for Envigado F.C. and the Colombian under-20 national team. He then joined Boca Juniors, a team in Argentina. He spent his first six months there playing for their youth team.
After his loan ended, Boca Juniors wanted to sign him permanently. However, Guarín chose to go on loan to AS Saint-Étienne in France in August 2006. He quickly made an impact, scoring two goals in a friendly game. He slowly earned his spot in the starting team as the season ended.
Guarín played his first game in the Ligue 1 on October 14, 2006. He scored his first goal in a 3–1 win against Troyes AC. In April 2007, his move to Saint-Étienne became permanent, and he signed a four-year contract.
Time with Porto

On July 10, 2008, Guarín signed a four-year contract with Primeira Liga club FC Porto in Portugal. During his time at Porto, he was often a substitute player. However, he still played regularly in many games. One of his most important goals was on May 16, 2010. It helped his team win the Taça de Portugal title again, beating G.D. Chaves 2–1.
In the 2010–11 season, even after a key player left, Guarín worked hard to get into Porto's starting lineup. He became a very important part of the midfield for the team, which ended up winning the national championship. He played over 40 official games and scored ten goals. Five of these goals were in the Europa League competition, which Porto also won.
Playing for Inter Milan

Guarín joined Inter Milan in Italy on January 31, 2012. He first joined on a loan deal. On May 17, 2012, Inter Milan made his move permanent. Guarín scored his first official goal for Inter on August 30. It was in a 2–2 home game in the Europa League. In the group stage of the same competition, he helped his team by providing three assists in a 3–1 win.
On February 21, 2013, Guarín scored two goals in another Europa League game. This helped Inter win 3–0 away from home and move on to the next round. In January 2014, there was talk of him moving to Juventus FC. However, the deal did not happen because the clubs could not agree. Guarín later clarified that he never asked to leave and just wanted to understand his future with the club.
On March 25, 2014, Guarín extended his contract with Inter until 2017. On September 14, he came on as a substitute and scored in a big 7–0 home win. At the start of the 2014–15 season, his coach started using him as a second striker.
On December 7, 2014, Guarín played his 100th game for Inter. He helped set up a goal in that game. On February 16, 2015, he scored two goals in a 4–1 away win. This helped his team get their first away win in the league since December 2014.
Later Career Teams
On January 26, 2016, Guarín moved to Shanghai Greenland Shenhua F.C. in the Chinese Super League. On September 26, 2019, at 33 years old, he joined CR Vasco da Gama in Brazil. He was a free agent at the time, meaning he was not under contract with any team.
Guarín then signed a one-year deal with Millonarios F.C. on December 31, 2020. This was also a free transfer.
Playing for Colombia
On May 24, 2006, Fredy Guarín played his first game for the Colombian national team. It was a friendly match before the 2006 World Cup. He represented Colombia in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2011 Copa América.
Guarín was chosen by coach José Pekerman to be part of Colombia's team for the 2014 World Cup. He played his first game in the tournament on June 24. Colombia had already won their first two group matches. He played the entire game in a 4–1 win against Japan. This was his 49th game for the national team. Four days later, he played his 50th game. He came on as a substitute to help Colombia beat Uruguay 2–0 in the round of 16.
On May 10, 2015, while playing for Inter Milan, Guarín got a muscle injury. This meant he could not play in the 2015 Copa América.
How He Played
Fredy Guarín was a very flexible player. He was a strong, fast, and creative attacking midfielder. He could also play in the center of the field, in a defensive role, or on the right side. He was good at shooting from far away with both feet. He could also help create plays for his team from the midfield.
In 2013, Andrea Stramaccioni, who was Guarín's coach at Inter, said he was "an extraordinary player who combines physicality with technique in an incredible way." He also mentioned that Guarín was an important person in the team's locker room.
