Fredy Alejandro Guarín Vásquez (born June 30, 1986) is a former professional football player from Colombia. He was a very flexible player. He could play in the middle of the field as a central, defensive, or right midfielder.
Fredy started his football journey with a team called Envigado. After that, he played for a short time in Argentina. Then, he spent two years playing in France for Saint-Étienne. He became well-known when he played for Porto in Portugal. There, he spent four seasons and won ten big titles. These included three Primeira Liga championships and the 2011 Europa League trophy.
Guarín also played for the Colombian national team. He represented his country in important tournaments. These included the 2011 Copa América and the 2014 World Cup.

Fredy Guarín's Club Career
Starting Out and Playing in France
Fredy Guarín was born in Puerto Boyacá, Colombia. In 2005, he was already a regular player for Envigado F.C.. He also played for the Colombian under-20 national team. He then joined Boca Juniors in Argentina. He spent his first six months there in their youth team.
After his loan ended, Boca Juniors wanted to sign him permanently. But Fredy chose to go on loan to AS Saint-Étienne in France in August 2006. He played his first game for the French team and scored two goals in a friendly match. This was against RCD Espanyol. He slowly earned a spot in the starting team as the season ended.
Fredy first played in the Ligue 1 on October 14, 2006. This was against Olympique Lyonnais. He scored his first goal in a 3–1 win over Troyes AC. In April 2007, Saint-Étienne signed him permanently for four years.
Playing for Porto

On July 10, 2008, Guarín signed a four-year contract with Primeira Liga club FC Porto. He was mainly used as a substitute during his time there. However, he still played regularly. One of his most important goals came on May 16, 2010. It helped his team win the Taça de Portugal title again. They defeated G.D. Chaves 2–1.
In the 2010–11 season, Fredy worked hard to get into Porto's starting team. Even after Raul Meireles left for Liverpool, he became a key player in midfield. He played over 40 official games and scored ten goals. Five of these goals were in the Europa League. Porto also won this competition that year.
Time with Inter Milan

Guarín joined Inter Milan on January 31, 2012. He came on loan to replace Thiago Motta. Inter had the option to sign him permanently in June. On May 17, 2012, Inter signed him permanently.
Fredy scored his first official goal for Inter on August 30. It was in a 2–2 home draw against FC Vaslui in the Europa League. In the group stage of the same competition, he helped his team win 3–1 against Neftchi Baku PFC. He provided all three assists in that game.
On February 21, 2013, Guarín scored two goals in a 3–0 away win over CFR Cluj. This helped Inter reach the last 16 of the Europa League. In January 2014, there was talk of him moving to Juventus FC. This would have been in exchange for Mirko Vučinić. But the deal did not happen because the clubs could not agree.
Fredy later said he never asked to leave the club. He just wanted to understand his future with Inter. On March 25, 2014, Guarín extended his contract until 2017. On September 14, he scored in a big 7–0 home win against U.S. Sassuolo Calcio. At the start of the 2014–15 season, his coach Walter Mazzarri started using him as a second striker.
On December 7, 2014, Fredy played his 100th game for Inter. He assisted Mauro Icardi in a match against Udinese Calcio. On February 16, 2015, he scored two goals in a 4–1 win at Atalanta BC. This was Inter's first away win in the league since December 2014.
Later Career Teams
On January 26, 2016, Guarín joined Shanghai Greenland Shenhua F.C. in the Chinese Super League. Later, on September 26, 2019, he moved to CR Vasco da Gama in Brazil. He was a free agent at 33 years old.
Fredy Guarín signed a one-year deal with Millonarios F.C. on December 31, 2020. This was another free transfer.
Fredy Guarín's International Career
Fredy Guarín played his first game for the Colombian national team on May 24, 2006. This was in a friendly match against Ecuador. He played for Colombia in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2011 Copa América.
Coach José Pekerman chose Guarín for the 2014 FIFA World Cup team. He played his first game in the tournament on June 24. Colombia had already won its first two group matches. Fredy played the full 90 minutes in a 4–1 win against Japan. This was his 49th game for his country. Four days later, he played his 50th game. He came on as a substitute to help Colombia beat Uruguay 2–0 in the round of 16.
On May 10, 2015, while playing for Inter, Guarín hurt his right leg. This injury meant he could not play in the 2015 Copa América.
Fredy Guarín's Style of Play
Fredy Guarín was a very flexible player. He was strong, fast, and creative. He could play as an attacking midfielder. He could also play in the center of the field, in a defensive role, or on the right side. He was good at shooting from far away with both feet. He could also act as a playmaker in the midfield.
In 2013, Fredy's coach at Inter, Andrea Stramaccioni, described him. He said Guarín was "an extraordinary player." He added that Fredy combined physical strength with great skill. He was also an important person in the team's locker room.
