The Story of Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove
Kirra's New Adventure in South Africa
The movie begins with an Australian girl named Kirra. She has to go live with her grandfather, Gus. Gus owns an old amusement park in Cape Town, South Africa. Kirra's dad is in the hospital for six weeks. Kirra is sad to leave her dad. But she soon makes a new friend, a boy named Sifiso.
Finding Willy the Orca
After a big storm, a baby male orca gets lost. He ends up stuck in a lagoon on Gus's property. The next morning, Kirra finds the orca. She decides to name him Willy. Willy quickly becomes a big hit with visitors to the park. But the stress of being watched makes him stop eating. Kirra worries about him. She works hard to get him to eat again.
A Plan to Help Willy
Gus has a business rival named Rolf Woods. Rolf finds out about Willy. He offers to buy Willy for a lot of money. But Gus doesn't agree to sell him. Kirra keeps trying to convince Gus to call for help. She wants to get Willy back to the ocean. They call a marine rescue center.
However, Willy has trouble using his echolocation skills. This is how orcas find things using sound. Because of this, he can't survive alone in the wild. This means he can't go back to the sea yet. Kirra doesn't give up. She researches ways to train Willy. She wants to help him use his echolocation. People tell her it's impossible. She even tries to feed Willy while he is blindfolded.
Danger and Friendship
Rolf Woods really wants Willy. He hires two men to try and harm Willy. Their plan is to make Gus sell Willy for less money. But Kirra sees them and stops their bad plan. The men run away. Rolf pretends he knows nothing about it. But he still offers to buy Willy again.
Kirra decides to camp out by the lagoon. She wants to keep Willy calm. One night, Willy wakes her up. He pulls her into the water. Then he lets her ride on his back! Kirra and Willy become a popular act at the park. Many reporters and cameras come to see them. The money they earn helps buy fish for Willy's training.
Willy Learns and a Tough Choice
Willy keeps practicing his echolocation. After many tries, he learns how to use it. He can now catch live fish in the lagoon. Meanwhile, Rolf comes back. He offers Gus a lower price for Willy. Gus has a lot of bills for Willy's food. So, Gus agrees to sell Willy to Rolf for $500,000. He insists the sale happens after Kirra leaves.
Mansa, one of Gus's employees, makes a special recording device. He hopes to record Willy's sounds. This could help them find Willy's family. But they don't have any luck for several days.
The Escape Plan
One day, Sifiso invites Kirra to his Uncle Rudy's safari park. He wants to cheer her up. On their way back, they see a billboard. It advertises Willy as a new attraction at Rolf's park! Kirra and Sifiso rush back. But Gus has already signed the papers to sell Willy. Kirra is very sad. She makes Gus promise that Rolf will take good care of Willy.
Later, Kirra goes to the lagoon. She sees Willy's family nearby! But Gus doesn't believe her. Kirra and Sifiso go to Uncle Rudy for help. They want to put Willy back in the ocean. They can't find Uncle Rudy. So, they take a crane truck. They drive it back to Pirate's Cove. Gus finally agrees to help them. He says they can return Willy to the ocean if his family is found.
Kirra and Sifiso head to the harbor with Willy. Gus and Mansa stay behind. They distract Rolf, who is on his way. Finally, they find Willy's family. Willy is reunited with them! Kirra jumps into the water to say goodbye to Willy.
Saying Goodbye
Kirra is next seen saying goodbye to Mansa and Sifiso. She promises to come back next summer. As she gets on the plane, Gus wipes away a tear. Kirra smiles. She takes one last look at Cape Town. Meanwhile, Willy and his family swim freely in the ocean.
