Freegle is a UK organisation that helps people give away and get things for free. Its main goal is to encourage reuse and reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill sites. It does this by providing a free online service where people can offer items they no longer need or ask for things they want. This helps keep useful items out of the bin!

What is Freegle and How Does it Work?

Freegle is like a big online community where people share items instead of throwing them away. Imagine you have a bike you've outgrown, or a book you've already read. Instead of putting it in the rubbish, you can offer it on Freegle. Someone else in your local area might need it! It's all about giving and getting things for free.

How Freegle Started

Freegle was created on 11 September 2009. Before that, many groups in the UK were part of a different organisation called Freecycle, which was based in the US. However, some disagreements came up about how the UK groups should be run. Because of these issues, many UK groups decided to leave and form their own organisation, which became Freegle.

How Local Groups are Organised

Each local Freegle group is run by volunteers. These volunteers help manage the group and make sure everything runs smoothly. Each local group is independent, but they all connect with the main Freegle Ltd organisation. To be part of Freegle, groups must follow some simple rules: it must be free to join, and all items given away must be free and legal. Freegle Limited is a registered society and also an exempt charity, which means it works for the good of the community.

Freegle's Community Size

In January 2021, Freegle had a large community across the UK. There were 453 local groups, supported by about 449 dedicated volunteers. Together, these groups had over 3.2 million members! This shows how many people are interested in reusing items and helping their local communities.

Using Freegle on Your Phone

Freegle has its own mobile app, which was launched in April 2015. This app makes it easy for people to access Freegle groups from their Android, iOS, or Kindle phones and tablets. You can quickly post items you want to give away or look for things you need, all from your mobile device.
