About the Freeman Book Awards
In 2016, some important groups started the Freeman Book Awards. These groups include the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) and Asia for Educators (AFE). The awards celebrate great books for kids and teens. These books help readers understand countries in East and Southeast Asia. Awards are given in two main groups: Children’s books and Young Adult books. The awards are named after the Freeman Foundation.
The Freeman Foundation was created in 1994. It honors Mansfield Freeman, a businessman who helped start a big insurance company called AIG. The foundation works to improve understanding between the United States and countries in East Asia.
