The Ville d'Archangel was a 600-ton ship that made an important journey in 1785. It carried a group of people called Acadians from France to a new home in Louisiana. This voyage was part of a big move for many Acadian families.
The Historic Voyage to Louisiana
The Ville d'Archangel began its journey from St. Malo, France, on August 12, 1785. Its main goal was to transport 303 Acadians across the Atlantic Ocean. These families were looking for a new place to live.
A Long Journey Across the Sea
The trip was long and challenging. The ship spent 113 days at sea. During this time, 15 passengers sadly died. Despite the difficulties, life continued aboard the ship. There were 7 marriages and 2 births during the voyage. Some new adults also joined the group.
Arrival in New Orleans
On November 4, the ship reached La Balize. This was an outpost at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The ship ran aground there, meaning it got stuck in the shallow water.
After this delay, the Ville d'Archangel finally arrived in New Orleans on December 3, 1785. When it landed, there were 60 Acadian families aboard. This added up to 299 people ready to start their new lives in Louisiana.
