Education and Early Career
Freya Van den Bossche went to high school at the Royal Atheneum Voskenslaan in her hometown of Ghent. After high school, she studied at the University of Ghent. In 1999, she earned a master's degree in Communication Sciences. She also studied for a year in Amsterdam as part of a student exchange program.
After finishing her studies, Freya started working for the mayor of Ghent. Her job was to help with communication and work on issues related to community safety.
A University Challenge
While she was a government minister, a magazine questioned if she had written her own final university paper, called a thesis. The magazine suggested that the paper was too complex and that someone else might have written it for her.
When a newspaper asked her about it, Freya stood up for herself. She said she had nothing to hide and offered to show her notes. The magazine later removed the article from its website.
Rise in National Politics
Freya became famous across Belgium after appearing in a TV debate. The debate featured young political candidates whose parents were also famous politicians.
In 2003, she was elected to the federal parliament, which is like the main government for all of Belgium. She was very popular and received 105,000 votes.
Becoming a Minister
Because of her success, Freya was quickly given a big responsibility. At just 28 years old, she became the Minister of Environment, Consumer Affairs, and Sustainable Development on July 12, 2003. This made her the youngest minister in Belgium's history.
A year later, her job changed, and she became responsible for Work and Consumer Affairs. In 2005, she was promoted again to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Budget. She held these top jobs until 2008.
Time magazine once wrote about her quick rise in politics. The article mentioned that laws in Belgium helped make sure women had top spots on party lists. Freya said she knew some people might think her looks or these laws helped her. But she added, "My job is to prove them wrong. I hope that in four years, people will be talking about my policies."
