Albino Friaça Cardoso (born October 20, 1924 – died January 12, 2009) was a famous Brazilian football striker. People usually called him simply Friaça. He was known for his powerful shots and important goals.
Friaça was born in Porciúncula, Brazil. He played professional football for over a decade. His career lasted from 1944 to 1955. He became a well-known player in Brazil.
Friaça's Football Career
Friaça played for three major Brazilian football clubs. These were Vasco da Gama, São Paulo, and Ponte Preta. He was a key player for these teams.
Club Successes
Friaça helped his teams win several important championships. With Vasco da Gama, he won the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State Tournament) twice, in 1947 and 1952. He also won the South American Championship of Champions in 1948 with Vasco. This was a very important international club tournament.
When he played for São Paulo, Friaça won the Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo State Tournament) in 1949. He was also the top goalscorer in that tournament, which means he scored more goals than any other player.
Playing for Brazil
Friaça also played for the Brazilian national team. He represented his country from 1947 to 1952. During this time, he played 13 matches and scored 1 goal.
His biggest moment with the national team was in 1949. He helped Brazil win the Copa América, a major South American football tournament.
1950 FIFA World Cup
Friaça was part of the Brazilian team that played in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. This World Cup was held in Brazil. He played in 4 matches during the tournament.
Brazil reached the final match, which was against Uruguay. This game was like a final, even though it was part of a round-robin group stage. Friaça scored the first goal in this important match. However, Brazil eventually lost the game 1–2 to Uruguay. This was a very sad moment for Brazilian football fans.
Later Life
Friaça passed away in Itaperuna, Brazil, in January 2009. He was 84 years old. His death was due to pneumonia and organ failure. He is remembered as a talented footballer and a part of Brazil's football history.
