Frida Kern (born March 9, 1891, died December 23, 1988) was an important Austrian composer. A composer is someone who writes music. Frida was born in Vienna, a famous city in Austria. She grew up in another Austrian city called Linz.

Frida started her musical journey by studying piano with a teacher named Anna Zappa. Later, she continued her music education at the Linz Music Academy. There, she learned from August Göllerich, who was also a music expert.

Frida Kern's Life and Music

In 1909, Frida married Max Kern. She began writing her own music just two years later, in 1911. She wanted to learn even more about composing and leading music groups. So, in 1923, she went to the Vienna Academy.

At the Vienna Academy, Frida studied how to write music with Franz Schmidt. She also learned how to conduct an orchestra with Robert Heger. Conducting means leading a group of musicians to play together. She kept learning from other teachers like Eusebius Mandyczewski and Alexander Wunderer. Frida finished her studies in 1927.

After her studies, Frida Kern created a special orchestra made up only of women musicians. This orchestra traveled and performed in many places across Europe and even in North Africa. Later, in 1942, she started teaching music at a school in Vienna.

Frida Kern's contributions to music were recognized. In 1960, the country of Austria honored her for her work. She passed away in Linz in 1988.

Musical Works by Frida Kern

Frida Kern wrote many different kinds of music. Here are some of her selected pieces:

  • Die vier Geigerlein (meaning "The Four Little Violinists") was written for four violins.
  • Flotenserenade op. 62 (Flute Serenade, Opus 62) was composed for a flute and a piano.
  • Scherzo was a piece for a French horn and a piano.
  • Spanischer Tanz Nr. 1 aus op. 24 (Spanish Dance No. 1 from Opus 24) could be played by a bassoon and piano, or a cello and piano.
  • Vier Stucke fur Blaserquintett op. 25 (Four Pieces for Wind Quintet, Opus 25) was written for a group of five wind instruments.

Some of Frida Kern's music has been recorded and released on CDs. One CD is simply titled Frida Kern.
